From the blast furnaces of Durgapur to the server farms of Rajarhat — from Haldia's deep-water jetties to the pharmaceutical plants of Falta SEZ — Bengal's industrial base is broader, more diverse and more competitive than the national narrative has ever given it credit for.
Sectors
New Town Rajarhat and the original Salt Lake Sector V together form the IT corridor of eastern India. Over 600 IT companies — from global majors like TCS, Infosys, IBM and Cognizant to hundreds of homegrown startups — now operate from these corridors, employing over four lakh professionals.
Bengal's IT ecosystem is distinguished by a talent base that other technology hubs envy: IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University and the Calcutta Institute of Technology among them produce graduates who are recruited by the world's top technology companies before they finish their final semester.
Durgapur Steel Plant — built in the 1950s with Soviet collaboration and once the centrepiece of Nehru's vision of a "temple of modern India" — is undergoing a ₹12,000 crore green modernisation that will double its capacity and dramatically reduce its carbon footprint. Allied Steel and IISCO Burnpur round out a heavy industry belt that supplies a significant portion of India's structural steel.
The Haldia Petrochemicals Complex is one of the largest petrochemical plants in India and the linchpin of Bengal's chemical industry cluster. The Haldia-Durgapur industrial corridor supports over 300 downstream chemical manufacturing units and contributes substantially to Bengal's export earnings.
Bengal is one of India's top five pharmaceutical manufacturing states. The Falta Special Economic Zone, Kalyani pharmaceutical cluster and several manufacturing zones around Kolkata are home to companies producing bulk drugs, formulations and medical devices for both domestic and international markets.
Bengal's location — as India's gateway to South-East Asia and Bangladesh — makes it a natural logistics hub. The Dankuni multimodal hub, the Kolkata Port Trust's expansion and the Dedicated Freight Corridor extension are together transforming the state into eastern India's distribution centre.
Bengal's garment industry — centred on Metiabruz and the Gariahat manufacturing clusters — employs hundreds of thousands of workers, predominantly women, and exports to markets across Europe and North America. The Government's focus on formalising the sector is improving wages and working conditions significantly.
As the largest producer of vegetables and one of the top producers of fish, rice and fruit in India, Bengal has a natural advantage in agro-processing. Cold chain investments, food parks and the Kolkata Leather Complex together support a processing industry that adds value to what Bengal's farmers grow.
Kolkata's startup ecosystem — supported by IIT Kharagpur's technology incubator, Jadavpur University's research facilities and a growing angel investor network — is producing companies in fintech, healthtech, edtech and agritech that are attracting national and international venture capital attention.
Annual Summit
Every year, the BGBS brings thousands of investors, industrialists and policymakers to Kolkata — and Bengal uses it to announce investment intentions that have, over the years, translated into billions of dollars of actual investment.
